What Is a 16-17 Saver Railcard?
A 16-17 Saver Railcard (known as a 16-17 Railcard) gives the holder 50% OFF most rail fares in Britain. You can use it for all Standard Anytime, Standard Off-Peak, Standard Advance, and Season tickets.
It’s available for everyone aged 16 or 17 until their 18th birthday. You can use it any time, making it ideal for school and college students and young people who travel at peak times.
Where Can I use a 16-17 Railcard?
A 16-17 Saver Railcard gives you 50% OFF most train tickets in Britain. There are no minimum fares or time restrictions.
You can buy and travel on discounted train tickets until your Railcard expires. Season ticket travel is available for up to four months after it expires.

What’s the Difference Between a 16-25 Railcard and a 16-17 Saver?
So, what’s the difference between a 16-25 Railcard and a 16-17 Saver? That’s an excellent question if you’re aged 16 or 17!
A 16-17 Saver gives you 50% OFF Standard class Anytime, Off-Peak, Advance and Season tickets. You can travel any time, making it perfect for school and college students and young people who travel at peak times by train.
A 16-25 Railcard is aimed at leisure train travellers and full-time students and gives you 1/3 OFF Standard class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance, and First class Advance tickets. On weekdays, a £12 minimum fare applies to journeys between 04:30 and 10:00. Season tickets are not applicable for a discount with a 16-25 Railcard.
How Much Does a 16-17 Railcard Cost?
The 16-17 Saver Railcard costs £30 a year and is valid for one year or up until your 18th birthday. Keep your eyes peeled for 16-17 Railcard promotions, discounts and offers.

The quickest and easiest way is to buy online. You’ll need the following:
- Evidence of your age – a passport, UK driving licence or national ID card
- A digital passport-sized photo (head and shoulders) to upload
- A debit or credit card for payment
If you don’t have the above forms of identification, check the website for more options.
If you’re buying for someone else, you’ll also need the 16-17 Railcard holder’s details, including their email addresses.

You can either download your Railcard to your phone or have a card posted to you.
The digital 16-17 Saver is stored in the Railcard app on your phone. After completing your purchase, you’ll be sent a code via email to upload to your app. The advantage of the digital card is you can use it straight away.
16-17 Saver paper format takes up to five working days for delivery. Usually, it’ll be dispatched free of charge within one working day. Or, you can pay extra and deliver it quicker by Special Delivery.
