Eurail Pass: The Basics
Discover the basics and key points about Eurail Passes.
What is a Eurail Pass?
With the Eurail Pass, you can travel as much as you like on participating European rail networks for a set time. Choose from a range of valid travel dates from four days to three months.
There are two main types of Eurail Passes: Global and One Country.
- Eurail Global Pass – for unlimited rail travel across 33 European countries
- Eurail One Country Pass – for unlimited rail travel in a single country or region
Eurail v Interrail
Eurail passes are only available to non-European citizens and non-European residents. European citizens can purchase an Interrail Pass for the same price as a Eurail Pass.
First-class v second-class: What’s the difference?
Eurail customers can choose to travel first or second class. First class offers more comfort and facilities than the budget-friendly second class.
First-class varies between countries and train operators; however, you can expect these first and second-class differences.
First Class | Second Class |
---|---|
Extra comfortable adjustable seats | Modern, comfortable seats |
Wider seats with more legroom | Compartments and open-plan seating |
Extra-wide tables | Multifunctional tables |
Quieter carriages with more privacy | Communal carriages |
Generous luggage space | Luggage racks and compartments |
Electric power per seat (and maybe USB ports) | Shared electric power for two seats |
Complimentary wifi | Wifi on some trains |
Meals and drinks served at your seat | Restaurant or bistro bar service |
Complimentary food and drinks | |
Access to station first-class lounges | |
Priority boarding |
Budget is usually the deciding factor between first and second-class; however, much depends on the Eurail adventure you’re looking for. The second class pass may be better if you want to meet people and have a more communal experience.
Finally, first-class passes give you access to first-class and second-class coaches and communal areas. Second-class passes are only valid in second-class coaches and communal areas.

Mobile vs paper pass: Which is best?
Whether you opt for a Eurail mobile or paper pass is a personal choice. But Eurail is pushing customers to use their mobile option.
If you prefer to have a physical souvenir of your trip and don’t mind paying for delivery, a paper pass is for you. With long shipping times, however, you’ll need to be organised. It’s worth getting Pass Protection for peace of mind.
The mobile pass offers a 100% refund with Plus, which is helpful if your travel plans change. It’s also more flexible for starting your trip and provides a free replacement if your phone is lost or stolen.
