Eurail Pass: The Basics

Discover the basics and key points about Eurail Passes.

What is a Eurail Pass?

With the Eurail Pass, you can travel as much as you like on participating European rail networks for a set time. Choose from a range of valid travel dates from four days up to a maximum of three months.

There are two main types of Eurail Pass, Global and One Country.

  • Eurail Global Pass – for unlimited rail travel across 33 European countries
  • Eurail One Country Pass – for unlimited rail travel in a single country or region

Eurail v Interrail

Eurail passes are only available to non-European citizens and non-European residents. European citizens can purchase an Interrail Pass for the same price as a Eurail Pass.

First-class v second-class: What’s the difference?

Eurail customers have the choice of travelling in first or second-class. Essentially, first-class offers more comfort and facilities than the budget-friendly second-class.

First-class varies between countries and train operators; however, you can expect these first and second-class differences.

First Class Second Class
Extra comfortable adjustable seats Modern, comfortable seats
Wider seats with more legroom Compartments and open plan seating
Extra-wide tables Multifunctional tables
Quieter carriages with more privacy Communal carriages
Generous luggage space Luggage racks and compartments
Electric power per seat (and maybe USB ports) Shared electric power for two seats
Complimentary wifi Wifi on some trains
Meals and drinks served at your seat Restaurant or bistro bar service
Complimentary food and drinks
Access to station first-class lounges
Priority boarding

Budget is usually the deciding factor between first and second-class; however, much depends on the Eurail adventure you’re looking for. Second-class may be better if you want to meet people and have a more communal experience.

Finally, first-class passes give you access to first-class and second-class coaches and communal areas. Second-class passes are only valid in second-class coaches and communal areas.

Eurail Paper vs Mobile Pass

Eurail Mobile or Paper Pass

Eurail offers mobile and paper passes, and unsurprisingly, there’re benefits to going mobile. If you opt for a paper pass, you won’t feel left behind, and it also makes an excellent souvenir.

Mobile pass

A Eurail mobile pass is paperless and added instantly to your phone via the Eurail Rail Planner app. To board trains and have your tickets inspected, you’ll need to show your mobile app.

  • Instant delivery – you’ll receive an email and instructions on how to get started with the Rail Planner app
  • Paper-free – activate your pass via the app with an activation code and more convenience
  • Flexible start date – no set start date; activate when you want up to 11 months after you’ve purchased your pass
  • Free replacement pass – if you lose your phone, Eurail will help you set up your pass on another one
  • Recording your journeys – you must record your journeys and show ticket inspections via the the ‘My Trip’ section of the Rail Planner app
  • Free cancellation with Plus – for a $25 fee, you can get a 100% refund of an unused mobile pass

Paper pass

The original Eurail paper pass where you fill in your travel diary as you go. To board trains and have your tickets inspected, you’ll need to show your paper pass.

  • Delivery by mail – you’ll need to pay for shipping and plan in advance due to extended delivery times
  • Shipping costs and times – Selected countries Eurail paper pass delivery costs and times. Eurail shipping takes a long time!
Country Shipping Cost Shipping Time
United States €18 1 month

Belgium €18 20 days
Brazil €19 1 month

Malaysia €20 21 days
Mexico €19 25 days
Netherlands €15 7 days
Singapore €20 21 days
South Africa €19 25 days
South Korea €20 21 days
Spain €18 20 days
Switzerland €18 20 days
Taiwan €20 21 days
  • Original paper pass – made from recycled paper, it makes a great souvenir
  • Set travel date – during the checkout, you need to specify a start date with a €15 charge to change it
  • Recording your journeys – you must record your journeys and show ticket inspectors, either in the ‘My Trip’ section on your paper pass cover or via the ‘My Trip’ section of the Rail Planner app
  • Pass protection – for $15, you can purchase Pass Protection which gives you a refund for train tickets and your Eurail pass if it’s lost or stolen; it’s only available if you buy your pass from Eurail.com

Mobile vs paper pass: Which is best?

Whether you opt for a Eurail mobile or paper pass is a personal choice. But, it’s clear Eurail is pushing customers to their mobile option.

If you prefer to have a physical souvenir of your trip and don’t mind paying for delivery, a paper pass is for you. With long shipping times, however, you’ll need to be organised. It’s worth getting Pass Protection for peace of mind.

The mobile pass offers a 100% refund with Plus, which is useful if your travel plans change. It’s also more flexible for starting your trip and provides a free replacement if your phone is lost or stolen.

The Eurail Rail Planner app has mixed reviews. If you choose a mobile pass, you’re more tied to the app. Therefore, a paper pass where you can choose whether to use the app is a more attractive option.
