Rail Passes in Japan: Discounted Train Travel in Japan

There are a range of rail passes in Japan for the Japan Railways (JR) and private railway line networks. The Japan Rail Pass is the most popular one; however, there’s also a range of regional rail passes which may suit your needs better.

Japan Rail Pass: Unlimited travel throughout Japan

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a ticket for unlimited travel on the Japan Railways (JR) network and includes all Shinkansen bullet train lines. It’s excellent value and in most cases works out cheaper than buying individual train tickets.

Japan Rail Pass Prices

Japan Rail Passes are for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days of travel. There are two types of Japan Rail Pass, Green Car (first class) and Ordinary Car (standard class).

Reserved seats

All tickets include seat reservations for the train time of your choice. In most cases, including trains running from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka, you can use your tickets on a different train the same day in unreserved seating.

Ordinary Car and Green Car

All online reservations include a choice of Green Car (first class) or Ordinary Car (standard class) seats. Green Car is more comfortable and includes features like wider reclining seats with footrests, more legroom and carriage space and reading lights.

Ticket delivery and pick-up options

Voyagin offers three types of delivery to hotels in Japan; Standard within three business days, same-day in Tokyo and next-day delivery in most of Japan. If you’re not staying in a hotel or need them in a hurry, can also pick them up from Voyagin’s office in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
