Thanks Alex.

The Grand, York - another interesting angle, originally built as offices and converted into a hotel. Just looked at the pics, looks very plush.

Old Course Hotel, St Andrews - a contender for best hotel view in Britain. Would love to stay there one day and relax with a wee dram of Dalmore after 18 holes :-)

Hi Tara

Thanks for your comment and insight. Interesting story about Marleybone and I've read also that the original plan was to have more platforms. Not used Marleybone Station much but it's one of my favourite London termini. It's smaller size gives it a 'villagey' feel with the cutesy shops and the gabled roof.

I'll check out the Landmark Hotel next time I'm that way. Definitely a case for including it when we update this article!

Another railway related building that is now a hotel that may be of interest is the former North Eastern Railway headquarters building in York which is a very grand, luxurious and ornate building. This is now the Grand Hotel. https://www.thegrandyork.co.uk/

The Old Course Hotel in St Andrews is another ex railway hotel worth noting.

I've never stayed but work right by Marylebone St. and The Landmark opposite is a beautiful building. I'm not 100% on it's history but quite sure I read somewhere that Marylebone was intended to be a much bigger terminus than it ended up being and the hotel ran out of money. I think the building was empty for a period of time in the 20th century before it was bought up and refurbished. It's beautiful now. Just a shame he Marylebone Road is so noisy and polluted!

Thanks for your comment. The railway hotels on this list are older but modern are fine too. The St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel is both old and modern. The original hotel closed in 1935 and if it wasn't for work of some 1960s preservationists it would have been demolished. For 76 years it was either used for railway offices or disused!

Thanks Alex for your comment and generosity. Your list of ex railway hotels will keep me busy for a while looking into their history. And plenty of ideas to expand this article. Wouldn't it be great to travel for a few months around Britain and stay in railway hotels?!

Hi Alan

Thanks for your interesting and insightful comment. Looked it up, what a beautiful building. Going to delve more into the history of the Royal Victoria. What an interesting angle as well, to expand on the Midland Hotel and cover hotels that were built for built for railways that - sadly - no longer exist.

Other ex railway hotels to look out for include: the PRINCIPAL YORK, Gleneagles Hotel, Balmoral Hotel (Edinburgh), ADNAZ Hotel (London Liverpool Street), Queens Hotel Leeds, Bovey Castle Hotel (Moretonhampstead in Devon ex Manor House Hotel), Hilton London Paddington, Landmark London (London Marylebone), Hallmark Hotels The Welcombe in Stratford upon Avon, Turnberry Hotel in Ayrshire, Midland Morecambe, Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh, Station Hotel Hull, Station Hotel Newcastle upon Tyne, Station Hotel Inverness, Fowey Hotel, Falmouth Hotel, Grand Hotel Torquay, Duke of Cornwall Hotel Plymouth, Metropole Hotel Padstow, etc.

So there are many great options to choose from. Midland Hotel in Morecambe is an art deco wonder but look out for the very novel and contemporary bathrooms in the bedrooms which may take you a while to find!

I'd endorse the comments about the Midland Hotel in Morecambe and I'd also add the Victoria Hotel in Sheffield to the list even though the adjacent Sheffield Victoria Station was (sadly and insanely) a victim of Lord Beeching. Some track and remnants of the station remain and the hotel has plenty of railway memorabilia, as well a very good rooms and a high standard breakfast that ain't cheap but will leave you not needing anything for lunch!
